Congratulations to Year 12 student Tom McKinnon! He was announced as the Western Region School Based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year at the 2013 NSW Training Awards—Western NSW Region Presentation Dinner held in Orange on Friday, 14th June 2013.
An outstanding student, Tom is not just studying for his HSC—he is also undertaking a School Based Apprenticeship in Electrical (Electrician) - Electrotechnology Certificate III. Tom started his apprenticeship with Borg Panels in Oberon nearly two years ago and has worked at there each Wednesday and most of his school holidays since starting his apprenticeship.
Tom is committed to performing to the best of his ability in all facets of school and work. He is the current school captain and is an exceptional role model for other students at Oberon High School. Every three weeks Tom attends a three day block of instruction at Bathurst TAFE College. He has managed to successfully balance his TAFE studies, work commitments and his HSC studies in Chemistry, English (Advanced), Physics, and Mathematics (by distance education). He also fits in coaching the Under 12's rugby league team.
Careers advisor Cheryl Fitzpatrick attended the star studded ceremony to support Tom in his quest to become the NSW School based Apprentice/Trainee of the Year. He was a credit to his family, school and community as he delivered an exceptional speech after being announced as the winner. Tom will compete at the state finals later in the year.
