Winning against the tyranny of distance

Year 11 students Alex Pointon and Jesse Curnuck are studying Engineering Studies via distance education, and last week received a visit from their teacher, Mr Dave Brazell, for some intensive face-to-face tutoring. Although Oberon may be considered somewhat isolated, this is not seen as a disadvantage as the school offers students a number of academic opportunities via distance education, in collaboration with Dubbo School of Distance Education. In addition to Engineering Studies, students are currently studying Chemistry, Legal Studies, Textiles, Japanese, Business Studies and Commerce by distance education. Students and their distance education teachers correspond through email, phone, video conference as well as "snail mail". They are also supported by the teachers at Oberon High School. Mr Ken Barwick, Principal, said that distance education provides wonderful opportunities for the students to expand their areas of study and experience subjects which provide potential for further study beyond high school,
