Oberon High School is only the third school in Australia to introduce an amazing program for senior Business Studies students. "Partner a Class" is a small community based program in which Commonwealth Bank executives work directly with our students, complementing classroom theory and providing opportunities for students to put learning into action.
The program, launched by Andrew Roberts, CommBank's Director, Market Positioning & Engagement and Glen Stewart, Manager of Oberon's Commonwealth Bank, is a wonderful opportunity for our students to gain life skills and relevant, industry-based knowledge that will enhance their current studies and be a huge benefit to them in whatever future they choose.
On the first day students participated in a fun (albeit educational) exercise. They worked in small groups, with one student elected as CEO, one elected as CFO and the whole team contributing. Their task was to build the tallest and most cost-effective free-standing tower, using only spaghetti, drinking straws and sticky tape. Creativity, imagination, engineering knowledge and financial acumen were all used, with some interesting results.
Under the Partner a Class program, which is running over the next 12 months, students have the opportunity to receive feedback on prescribed assignments and class activities from bank executives. The program helps students with presentation skills, personal presence and preparing for future job interviews.
